2024 AGM and Talk

We very much look forward to welcoming you to the next event in our calendar, an illustrated talk about the The Great Train Robbery which is to be given by John Flewin.

John writes:-

“I was there!”

On the 8th of August 1963 I was eight months into a career in journalism, a trainee on the local newspaper at Leighton Buzzard. The story is told from my own experiences and those of three others who became colleagues during my career — one, a photographer who was the first journalist on the scene, the others television news reporters who covered the happenings for ITN, and whose coverage comes out of the archive. The presentation touches on vintage movies of train robberies, moving through time to the beaches of Rio where train robber Ronnie Biggs spent his best years. Was the whole affair worth it for the robbers? They answer that question”

John’s talk, in the main hall of Quainton’s Memorial Hall, will start at 7.30pm on 15 October 2024 and precede our AGM.

The Hall will be open for you from 7.00pm and, as usual, wine and refreshments will be available. We very much look forward to your support and company in joining us for a fascinating and enjoyable evening.

Planning

Your Society continues to monitor planning applications as they appear and has opposed the recent application for a development at 42A Upper Street.

This application sought permission for a 4 house development which QVS considered to be unsuitable in both appearance and position within the village. The application has since been 'Withdrawn/Not Proceeded With'

Visit

Following the late Dick Carter's excellent talk to QVS, we had hoped to visit the Leather Museum in Northampton. This was postponed due to the museum's intended premises move, but will now be re-considered.

We are also considering re-visiting Broughton Castle that we last went to in June 2015.

We look forward to your company on 15 October 2024.

Best wishes - Martin
